Bowring Institute was founded in 1868. The building follows the Victorian style of architecture. The current-day Bowring Institute, both in its exteriors and interior, resembles a swank boutique hotel as much as it does a club.
An adherence to traditional conservation methods in restoring the building has been paired with daringly contemporary interiors and lighting as well as lush landscaping and other changes across the club premises.
The abutments and extensions to the project are being carried
out in phases. The oldest building on the premise was restored
and is now called the Heritage Building. The restoration
process did not utilize any steel or cement. The main features
are the vaults and bricks.
The bricks used for restoring the so-called Madras terrace
roofs were of a custom size and had to be specially made. The
Heritage Building houses The Leather Bar which is replete with
plush leather couches from European designers and chairs from
Italy and Austria that reflect the modernity of the 20th
century. The President Lounge, A reading room, a European
cafe, and a Ballroom complete the elegant amenities offered by
the institute.
The European cafe, Zed the Baker houses an elegant entrance
porch which resembles old Railway Station. The café’s interior
features brick-clad walls and wooden flooring, accented by
large bay windows and cozy corner nooks furnished with
European-style furniture.
The North Pavilion, built in warehouse timber accommodates the show kitchen and an outdoor verandah with a seating porch. The Main Lotus Lawn, typically used for gatherings and events, features a stage with a steel structure and a cantilevered roof extending 10 meters on one end, and an iconic cast-iron gate on the other.
